Trying to Make the Driving World a Little Less Annoying

Humanity Is Doomed

So far this year we’ve had earthquakes, the sky turning black, and soon, locusts. I’m not sure where that leaves us on the Biblical Plagues bingo card, but after I realized that people can’t even drive on a simple bend on the freeway, I’m pretty sure the end is near.

“By the Time I Get to Phoenix”

As I’m wont to do, I was putting my trip notes from our family vacation last summer to the Grand Canyon into an Excel spreadsheet. I have many reasons for logging my trip notes, but the primary one is generally to procrastinate from doing something, like filing my taxes.

Traces of My Life, Part 3

A few years ago I posted about three of my cars hitting 148,300 miles at about the same time, something which took 15.3 years of random planning. That led me to look at my driving mileage at different points of my life. I’m doing that again here, but this time looking at my annual mileage. That just makes it easier to see the difference between being single and being married.

2,000 Miles in 20 Minutes

Here’s the video of my trip from Sault Ste Marie to Key West taken in the middle of winter (in the northern hemisphere).

The video is technically 1,974 miles in 18:50 minutes, but that doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue.

SAULT STE MARIE, MI — Bertha Benz, the wife of Karl Benz, was the first person to take a road trip. Without telling her husband (or the authorities), she took a Patent Motorwagen and drove with her children Eugen and Richard (fifteen and thirteen years old respectively) 66 miles, from Mannheim to Pforzheim. She left at dawn on August 5, 1888 and arrived at her mother’s home at dusk. They returned the next day.

Kitchen Pass to Zebulon’s Mountain

Road trips make me un-cranky. My favorite trips tend to head west from Detroit, since these avoid Ohio. They seem to have some vague justification, like family gatherings, races, and so on, but these are just McGuffins, simply to point the car in a rough direction.
