I tend to over-obsess about the weather, so when I heard that February was the coldest month in Detroit in 140 years, I had to investigate. It turned out that at an average of 14.5°F, it was the coldest since February 1875, which had an average of 12.2°F. Michiganders around here are acting like 42°F is the start of summer now.

Last year the Detroit area broke the record for the most snow fall.

What I’m starting to realize is that breaking any record about the weather is always bad.

We obsessively track things like highest/lowest temperature, most snowfall, longest drought, strongest hurricane, etc., presumably so we can have conversations around our morning coffee.

I really don’t want to hear about using the most road salt ever.

Why don’t we ever track things like “most dry days/rainy nights since Camelot,” or “longest consecutive number of days of pleasant tropical weather with gentle ocean breezes?”

It’s enough to make me want to move to Malta.

Crankiness Rating: 11 out of 11 (I bet those Canadians have something to do about this cold.)
