Pizza Delivery, German-Style

“Do you think we should pick up some pizza for my dad?”

We were on our way to visit my wife’s parents. Her father had been taking care of her mom in the nursing home and hadn’t had much time for himself.

“Sure, that’s a good idea.”

My wife looked up pizza places in town and started calling. Our kids, lacking internet connection, were in the back seat staring out the window.

“Could you slow down a bit? It’s hard to hear.”

I dropped the Subaru down below 100 mph.

Specialty Car

As I had previously threatened, I bought a new car, but I’m not excited about it. I traded in my Subaru WRX STI for a VW Golf R, and the loss of my old car overwhelms any excitement of a new car, probably because I’m a hoarder I can’t let go.

Driving down Stelvio Pass

Stelvio Pass

I give myself one job when we go on vacation: driving the car. My wife handles the trivial things like: packing, lodging, food, sights, and kids. Of course, we only drive if our destination is in the same continent1.

Are You TÜV Enough?

[Update 2016-06-25: accidentally deleted this post, and lost some info posting it back. Oops.]

It took a while, but I finally got my approval from TÜV (Technischer Überwachungsverein) for my 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI. This is necessary to register my car in Germany. A car requires this approval every two years.

All Is Well Again

The world certainly doesn’t seem well, but my little part of it got significantly better last night. I was finally able to drive my car in Germany. Yesterday, after weeks of trying, I got the person helping me to understand what I needed for insurance. So as soon as I got home, I gassed up the car.

Happy 150,000 Miles!

My STI turned 150,000 miles today! I just seemed like 2 years and 21 days ago that it was just turning 100,000 miles. It’s amazing how time flies with these little ones.

Traces of My Life

I was playing around with Excel the other day, as engineers who obsessively collect data are wont to do. I had plotted an interesting convergence—three of my cars (if I count my wife’s) had almost the same mileage last week.

The mileage of my Honda Civic was overtaken by my wife’s Subaru Legacy, which was later overtaken by my Subaru STI. This took over 148,300 miles and 15.3 years of meticulous planning to achieve (note: no actually planning conducted).

I don’t know if I’m an engineer because I like numbers, or I like numbers because I’m an engineer. Statistically speaking, numbers are better in math than letters.

Time Passages

My daily driver recently turned 100,000 miles. Yet somehow I’m the one that feels old. Actually, any sense of time passing makes me feel old.

Technically I’m probably middle age, although that seems so old just to type that. I don’t have my AARP membership yet, so I’m not getting the Denny’s discount.

Slow Subaru, Practical Porsche

[see updates below]

Two months, two weeks, four days, one hour and fourteen minutes and lots and lots of dollars later, I finally got my car back. This included getting the car a new engine (short block), returning it for a check engine light (P0024 Exhaust AVCS System 2 Range/Performance), then promptly bricking the ECM when I got it home again (note to self: next time, brick ECM when car is in garage), and then finally getting the ECM quickly reset (thanks Cobb Tuning!).
